Philadelphia & Chester County, Pennsylvania: Food, Wine & Cheese Journey

West End Excursions is sending you on a Chester County Cheese getaway that begins and ends in Philadelphia, one of the country’s top culinary cities. Your co-hosts are writer and cheese maven Tenaya Darlington, a.k.a. Madame Fromage, and Cheese Journeys Founder and CEO Anna Juhl – who will be joined by a cadre of local food and beverage experts! This epic weekend concludes with a farewell feast at a private “Last Supper” event hosted by the expert cheesemongers at Di Bruno’s. Learn, relax, and explore in the company of other food lovers!

Day 1

Dine under the stars

Our four-day journey begins in Philadelphia, with a taste of old-world charm at the famous DiBruno Bros. specialty food store in the city’s Italian Market, a walking tour of the neighbourhood, lunch at a family-owned traditional Italian restaurant, and a visit to the iconic Termini Brothers Italian bakery. We’ll head for the rolling hills of Chester County and our home-away-fromhome for the next three nights: the stunning Inn at Grace Winery. Situated on 50 acres in the Brandywine Valley, Grace Winery is a peaceful haven rich in history — the original manor house dates back to 1734, with an additional wing added in 1815 all updated to meet today’s standards for luxury accommodations. After a tour of the vineyard and estate, we’ll be joined by a couple of our favorite local cheesemakers for the finale to our day – a chef-prepared dinner under the stars in the vineyards.

Day 2

Teach me more

We start the day with a hands-on cooking demo with Grace Winery’s chef, followed by a relaxing “Cocktail and Food Photography” workshop led by Madame Fromage. After a visit to the awardwinning Farm at Doe Run, spend the afternoon at Kennett Square, dubbed the “Mushroom Capital of the World”. Stop in at the legendary Talula’s Table cafe, shop in the historic village, or visit Victory Brewery’s brewpub. Back at the Inn, spend a relaxing evening with light dinner in the winery, a swim, a walk in the vineyard or just curling up in a chair with a good book.

Day 3

Say cheese in Chester

This day is spent entirely in Chester County. After breakfast, we’ll depart for a “Cheese Festival” at a local shared kitchen and business incubator for food producers. We take in a brewery tour and tasting at Lavante Brewing Company, then head up the road to visit family-owned and operated Birchrun Hills Farm, an award-winning producer of handcrafted artisanal raw milk cheeses. Wrap up the day enjoying a relaxing free evening back at The Inn at Grace Winery.

Day 4

It’s always tea time

After breakfast and a special tea tasting with tea expert Alexis Siemons, we visit Artifaqt, maker of hand-crafted cheeseboards and serving ware. The rest of the day is spent in Philadelphia, with a stop at Rowhouse Spirits, a tiny artisan distillery, and a studio visit with food portrait artist Mike Geno. We cap the trip off where we began our journey – with an exclusive after-hours event at DiBruno Bros., only this time the store will be our own private tasting playground. The expert cheesemongers will take us through tasting tutorials of cheeses, meats, antipasti, oils, vinegars, and chocolate, creating unique pairing concoctions especially for us. Plus, we can taste almost anything else in the shop that piques our curiosity!
