The Miccosukee & The Cuban Exile
March 13th thru March 14th, 2018
Miami Unfolded - Part 1: The Miccosukee & The Cuban Exile
An Invitation from the Panther Clan
The gathering begins at St. Andrews Estates ACTS Community followed by the departure for our overnight Miami adventure!
Today we check into a classic Art Deco gem in the heart of South Beach. Dozens of large portraits of historic Miami line the hallways. The back of the hotel features a cozy bar and a long, inviting pool leading to the ocean. The front of the hotel offers a welcoming porch and dozens of sidewalk restaurants and cafes only steps away. After settling in, we set off for an afternoon of adventure in the Everglades.
Skip across the shallow waters and sawgrass prairie to a distant Miccosukee island as your guides prepare you for a day of natural wonders and cultural discovery! Watch in wonder as great blue herons, egrets, wood storks and ibises take flight as we travel into the true heart of the Florida Everglades. It is here among the sawgrass prairie that remote cypress islands filled with Seminole and Miccosukee history still exist and it is here
that our adventure begins …
Only accessible by airboat, we travel miles into the Everglades to experience two historic Miccosukee island camps. We walk the islands that they once called home to hear how the Miccosukee families for generations learned to live in harmony with what many considered an unlivable landscape.
Seek out the family of wild gators that live near the big camp. If they care to show themselves, our guide will demonstrate his ability to “speak gator.” To the amazement of all, the gators respond.
Dinner tonight takes us down to the Miami River where Garcia’s, a beloved longtime seafood restaurant celebrates its perch over the busy and eclectic liquid heart of the city. (D)
A Dramatic Tale of Exile and Assimilation
A relaxing morning poolside or beach side or both! But make sure you have a hearty breakfast because after checking out, we depart on a journey through the story of Miami’s Cuban community.
It was not long ago that Miami was a rather large but quiet Southern city. The Castro revolution in Cuba in 1959 changed Miami forever. Wave after wave of Cuban refugees have transformed Miami into the Capital of the Americas: a fast-paced, internationally-connected, commercial and entertainment hub with a racy Latin image. From the food to the accents on the street to the fashion scene and artist’s studio, Miami pulses to the beat of an original blended culture.
Experience the passion and vision that these motivated exiles brought to their new home. We visit a well-loved marketplace, great Cuban food spots, moving monuments, lively street scenes and a place of spiritual reflection and longing. Take in the aromas, sights, sounds and colors of a street that launched the dramatic transformation of Miami over five decades ago and prepare yourself for a day of discovery and fun.
With new memories and experiences behind us, we look forward to the next ACTS –venture! (B,L)
