Cuba:My Heart is in Havana
September 12th thru September 17th, 2018
Cuba: My Heart is in HavanaChristopher Columbus called Cuba the “most beautiful earth than human eyes have ever seen”. Discovered by Columbus in 1492, the beauty is still there but sometimes hidden under the last 58 years of the Castro Regime. But when you step off the plane at Jose Marti International, called the Glass Bowl because of all the windows in the airport, you will feel you have been transformed back to the late 50’s before the Revolution. Cars that date back to that era are in abundance and used as taxis and special occasions such as weddings and quinceaneras with beautiful young girls riding on the back of the convertibles.
But before we go back in time, let’s look at the present and the future of the Cuban people with our host, Charles J. Kropke, CEO of Dragonfly Expeditions. Exploring Little Havana through the Cuban Heritage Tour in Miami, we will see what happened January 1, 1960 to the present. We will understand the changes that shaped a people who had lived a good life on the island of Cuba.
Our adventure will continue with a short flight to Havana, Capital of Cuba, where we will see the beautiful architecture that dates back as far as the 1500’s. We will walk through Old Havana as Hemingway did when he lived in his home, Finca Vigia, built in 1886 by Catalan architect Miguel Pascual y Baguer, and visit the hotel, Ambos Mundos, where he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls in Room 511. Papa Hemingway loved Cuba and made his home there from 1939 to 1960.
The Regime has allowed people to open private businesses and many have created fabulous restaurants. We will visit and enjoy some of the best. Don’t be shocked when we walk into a building that appears to be crumbling….at the top of the stairs will be an amazing adventure in dining!
One of our visits will be with Milton Bernal. His artwork is extraordinary as he paints with tobacco leaves. I’m sure he would be glad to paint your portrait!
As we immerse ourselves in the culture of the Cuban people, you will feel a sense of gratitude for our visit to their homeland. A humble, sweetness embraces us as we enjoy their lifestyles and appreciate their zeal for life in spite of their circumstances.
